Why should my child see an orthodontist at age 7?

Early intervention to guide proper development

Did you know that your child could benefit from orthodontic treatment as early as age 7? At our specialist Worcester Park clinic, we offer interceptive orthodontics – early intervention treatments that guide your child’s jaw development and tooth eruption, often preventing complex problems before they fully develop.

Unlike traditional teenage orthodontics, interceptive treatment works with your child’s natural growth patterns to create space for permanent teeth, correct bite issues, and address harmful habits like thumb sucking. Many children who receive early intervention need shorter, simpler treatment as teenagers – or sometimes no further treatment at all.

Our Worcester Park team of paediatric specialists uses child-friendly technology including iTero digital scanners and offers treatments like palatal expansion, Invisalign Teen/Kids, and functional appliances. As Invisalign Diamond Apex providers, we’re in the top 1% of European clinics for exceptional results.

Discover everything you need to know about interceptive orthodontics for children and how early intervention can benefit your child’s developing smile.

My HydraFacial at Love Skin was brilliant. The clinic has such a professional vibe, and the team were so friendly and accommodating. My skin felt super clean, smooth, and hydrated afterwards. I dropped one star only because I wish the effects lasted longer – but honestly, I’ll be back for another soon!

Came in for a consultation with Michal regarding composite bonding – all staff were super friendly and welcoming. Michal was hilarious and really put me at ease, he answered all my questions and gave me honest, informative options which was then given to me as a print out. Really appreciated the environment and will definitely be going ahead with my treatment with these guys!

Dr KP is highly competent. I am so pleased with my teeth and the service at Love Teeth. The clinic is very welcoming and not clinical like most dentists. Kerry is also a great receptionist and very helpful. Firstly from the consultation with Dr KP I came away so impressed as he understands and doesn’t talk you into anything and explained in depth all the process and answered any questions I had on all the treatments he provides. You don’t feel rushed at all. I really like his expertise and feel completely at ease and confident in his care and I have had the same dentist for over 25 years so never thought I’d say that. He literally did a few adjustments to my teeth and they look amazing! I would highly recommend and I am looking forward to having some more treatments done. Thank you.

Friendly, professional practice – I registered with my local Love Teeth Dental practice back in September and have not regretted it. The technology they have is amazing! Dr Laraeb and her lovely nurse are such a great team working together, reassuring and making sure I am comfortable while crowning my tooth. All my planned treatments and costs were explained to me. I am not left waiting weeks/months for an appointment and are available on the day that works best for me. I have also visited the hygienist, who again was friendly, professional and explained how to look after my teeth. Happy I moved to my local Love Teeth Dental practice.

When should my child first visit a dentist?

We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit around their first birthday or when their first tooth appears – whichever comes first. These early visits aren’t about extensive treatment. Instead, they’re about building familiarity with the dental environment, allowing our team to check your child’s oral development, and providing guidance on caring for baby teeth.

Many parents across Surrey are surprised to learn that early dental care can prevent issues before they develop. Baby teeth are crucial for speech development, proper nutrition, and guiding permanent teeth into the correct position. At our Worcester Park children’s clinic and across all our Surrey locations (Sutton, Cheam, Chessington, Stonecot), we make first visits fun and stress-free, setting the stage for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.

Why early orthodontic assessment matters

Many parents don’t realise that orthodontic issues can be identified and addressed as early as age 7. This is called interceptive orthodontics, and it can prevent more complex problems later. Early assessment allows us to monitor jaw growth, identify crowding issues before they worsen, correct harmful oral habits like thumb sucking, and guide permanent teeth into proper positions.

Early intervention doesn’t always mean immediate treatment. Often, we’re simply monitoring development and planning the optimal time to begin treatment if needed. This proactive approach can reduce treatment time, avoid tooth extractions, and sometimes eliminate the need for more extensive orthodontics later.

Interceptive orthodontics for kids – why Surrey parents are starting treatment at age 7

As winners of the 2024 Child-Friendly Practice of the Year award, our team has extensive experience in early orthodontic assessment and treatment across all our Surrey locations.

At what age should my child start brushing their teeth?

Start cleaning your baby’s gums even before teeth appear, using a soft, damp cloth after feeding. Once the first tooth erupts (usually around 6 months), begin brushing twice daily with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). At age 3, you can increase to a pea-sized amount. Children typically need help brushing until around age 7-8, when they develop the dexterity to brush effectively themselves. At Love Teeth, our team provides demonstrations during appointments to ensure parents and children master proper brushing technique.

How can I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Talk positively about the dentist in the days leading up to the appointment, avoiding words like “pain,” “hurt,” or “needle.” Read children’s books about visiting the dentist or watch age-appropriate videos. Let your child know they’ll meet friendly people who help keep teeth healthy and strong. Avoid using dental visits as threats or punishments. At our Surrey practices, particularly our Worcester Park children’s clinic, we’ve designed the environment to be welcoming and fun. Many children are excited to visit once they see the cinema and child-friendly atmosphere. Schedule morning appointments when children are typically more cooperative and well-rested.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes, dental X-rays are extremely safe for children. We use digital X-rays at Love Teeth, which produce up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The amount of radiation exposure is minimal – comparable to what your child receives during a short airplane flight. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary, typically to check for cavities between teeth that can’t be seen during visual examination, assess the development of permanent teeth, or evaluate orthodontic needs. Children wear protective lead aprons during X-rays for added safety. The benefits of detecting problems early far outweigh the minimal radiation exposure.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

This is a dental emergency requiring immediate attention. Find the tooth and handle it by the crown (top part) only – never touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline solution (never tap water or soap). Try to place it back in the socket if possible, holding it in place with clean gauze. If you can’t reinsert it, keep it moist by placing it in milk, saline solution, or having your child hold it in their cheek (if old enough not to swallow it). Call Love Teeth immediately on 020 8337 0629. Time is critical – the tooth has the best chance of being saved if reinserted within 30 minutes. For baby teeth that are knocked out, don’t attempt to reinsert them, but still contact us for assessment.

When do children need orthodontic treatment?

The ideal time for orthodontic assessment is around age 7, though treatment may not begin until later. Early assessment allows us to identify issues like crossbites, severe crowding, protruding front teeth, or jaw growth problems while they’re easier to address. Some children benefit from early interceptive treatment between ages 7-10, which can prevent more complex problems later. Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment begins between ages 11-14, when most permanent teeth have erupted. However, every child is different. At Love Teeth, we offer Invisalign Teen for teenagers who want discreet orthodontic treatment, as well as traditional options. Our Diamond Apex Invisalign provider status means your child receives expert orthodontic care across all our Surrey locations.

How often should children visit the dentist?

We typically recommend dental check-ups every six months for children. However, some children may need more frequent visits if they’re at higher risk for cavities, have orthodontic appliances, or have other dental concerns. Regular visits allow us to monitor oral development, catch problems early when they’re easier to treat, provide professional cleaning and fluoride treatment, and reinforce good oral hygiene habits. These routine appointments also help children become comfortable with dental visits, reducing anxiety as they grow. At our Worcester Park children’s clinic and across all Love Teeth Surrey locations, we make every visit positive and educational.

What if my child is anxious or scared of the dentist?

Dental anxiety in children is common, and we’re experts at helping anxious children feel comfortable. Our team, recognised with the 2024 Child-Friendly Practice of the Year award, uses gentle, patient-centred techniques. We never rush appointments, explain everything in child-friendly language, use “tell-show-do” techniques to build trust, celebrate brave behaviour without shaming fear, and allow parents to stay with their child during treatment. For children with significant anxiety, we offer gentle sedation options including happy air (nitrous oxide) to help them relax. Our Worcester Park clinic’s cinema and engaging environment help distract and calm nervous children. Many parents tell us their previously anxious children actually look forward to visiting Love Teeth.

Should my child wear a sports guard?

Yes, if your child plays contact sports or activities with risk of mouth injury (football, rugby, hockey, basketball, skateboarding, etc.), a custom sports guard is essential. Sports injuries account for a significant percentage of dental emergencies in children. A properly fitted sports guard protects teeth from chips, fractures, or being knocked out, cushions blows that could cause jaw fractures, and protects soft tissues like lips, tongue, and cheeks. At Love Teeth, we create custom sports guards tailored to your child’s mouth, offering superior protection and comfort compared to shop-bought versions. They’re available in various colours, making them appealing to young athletes. Custom guards are more comfortable, stay in place better, and allow easier breathing and speaking during sports.
