What happens during Invisalign treatment? Your step-by-step guide
Invisalign® aligners aren’t like the fixed braces you’ve probably seen before. The discreet straightener doesn’t rely on tightening brackets and wires to bring teeth into the perfect position. Instead, you’ll take home a series of several custom-made appliances, each of which nudges the teeth a little closer to perfection.
Stage one
First impressions
Once you’ve decided to go ahead with Invisalign®, we’ll start by taking a FREE digital 3D iTero scan of your teeth so that your first aligners can be made at Invisalign’s® laboratory. We’ll send the scans to them along with a detailed set of instructions for production.
Stage two
Aligner production
Invisalign® uses advanced 3D computer imaging technology to transform your bite impressions into a series of custom-made clear and removable aligners. Depending on your treatment plan, there may be as many as 48 in the series or as few as 12.
Stage three
Your fitting
It usually takes a few weeks for Invisalign® to produce the aligners and send them back to us. You’ll be invited back to Love Teeth to have the first aligner fitted as soon as we receive them. We’ll let you know how to wear and care for your aligner and give you a few additional sets to wear before you return.
Stage four
Treatment
You’ll wear each set of aligners day and night for about two weeks, removing them to eat, drink, brush and floss. Total treatment time averages 9 to 15 months but will vary from case to case. You’ll visit us only every six weeks to ensure your treatment progresses as planned.
Stage five
Smile!
When you’ve finished wearing each aligner in the series, your treatment will be complete, and you will have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. To ensure that your perfect new smile stays this way, you’ll wear retainers at night for the first six months and then as instructed by your dentist (usually a few times a week.)

Can I drink coffee or tea with my aligners in?
We recommend removing your aligners before drinking anything except cool water. Hot beverages can warp the plastic, and dark drinks can stain the clear aligners. The good news? You can absolutely enjoy your morning coffee – just take them out first. Many patients develop a routine: remove aligners, enjoy coffee at breakfast, brush teeth, replace aligners.
Am I too old for Invisalign?

What happens if I lose or break an aligner?

Depending on your treatment stage, we may advise moving to your next aligner or going back to the previous one whilst we order a replacement. As a Diamond Apex provider, we can often expedite replacements. Always store aligners in their case when not wearing them – never wrap in a napkin (the most common way they get lost!).
Will Invisalign affect my speech?
You may experience a very slight lisp when you first start wearing aligners, but this typically resolves within 2-3 days. Your tongue just needs a brief adjustment period. Most Love Teeth patients report that within a week, they forget they’re even wearing aligners. Invisalign’s thin design has minimal impact on speech compared to traditional braces.
